History

Greendale Farm was bought by the Back family in the early 1970’s as a valuable addition to the Backsberg Wine Estate.  A fourth generations Wine Estate, Backsberg is one of the Western Capes most well known wine brands and is a current the world leader in sustainable farming practices.

With a beautiful bass dam and cool afternoon breezes arising from a Simonsberg Mountain backdrop, this Greendale Farm was considered ideal for the cultivation of grapes.  Initially the farm was planted with Pinotage and for about 25 years rewarded Backsberg Wine Estate with consistently high quality crops.  However under the pressure of sanctions in the 80’s and an over supply of wine, some of the vineyard was replaced with citrus orchards.  2005 saw the redevelopment of the entire property back to exclusively vineyards which now comprise well known varieties like Cabernet and Chardonnay, but also some interesting and lesser known varieties like Gewurtztraminer, Carrignan and Durif.

What remains is to complete the tree planting program which has seen over 150 young trees planted and to establish a sustainable bamboo plantation in a wet basin area.  It is hoped that this will significantly add to the existing habitat of the resident Cape Otter, Duiker (endemic buck) and multitude of birds life including a pair of Fish Eagles.

Together with the conversion of the vineyards to organic over the coming years (restricted use of chemicals) the vision for the farm is to partner with nature in establishing a “Clean, Green and Serene” working and living environment.  Greendale Farm is now wonderfully setup for the enjoyment by the next generation and the current owner and his family are eager to share this rural paradise with a select few who would like to actively partake in the custodianship of this unique property in the years to come.
